A test that checks how your muscles and the nerves that control them are working.
Electromyography (EMG) measures the electrical activity of your muscles at rest and when you contract them. A thin needle electrode is placed in the muscle to record this activity.
It helps doctors tell whether weakness, pain, numbness or muscle twitching is caused by a problem in the muscle itself or in the nerves that supply it. EMG is often done together with a nerve conduction study (NCS).
At Apollo Clinic Shyamnagar, the procedure is explained beforehand, and the findings are discussed with you by the doctor.
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Duration | Usually 30–60 minutes, longer if done together with a nerve conduction study |
| Preparation | Bathe beforehand and avoid lotions or oils on the skin; tell the staff if you take blood thinners, have a pacemaker or bleeding problems; wear loose clothing |
| What Happens | A very thin needle electrode is inserted into selected muscles, and the electrical activity is recorded while the muscle is relaxed and then gently contracted |
| Who It's For | People with muscle weakness, cramps or twitching, numbness or tingling, or suspected nerve or muscle disorders |
EMG is recommended when a doctor needs to find out whether a muscle or nerve problem is behind your symptoms.

You may feel brief discomfort or a cramp-like sensation when the needle is inserted or the muscle is tested. It is usually tolerable and settles quickly.
Tell the staff beforehand. The doctor will decide whether the test is safe or whether any changes are needed. Do not stop medicines on your own.
The muscle may feel a little sore, and there can be slight bruising at the needle site for a day or two. You can usually return to normal activities.
Testing both the nerve and the muscle gives a fuller picture of where the problem lies.
